MONOETHYLENE GLYCOL (MEG)

Ethylene glycol is a dihydric alcohol with the chemical formula C2H6O2. According to the international classification, it belongs to hazard class 3 in terms of its effect on the human body. Ethylene glycol self‑ignites at a temperature of 180°C and boils at 197°C. Its freezing point is -22°C. Monoethylene glycol is easily miscible with water, other alcohols, and acetones, and it lowers the freezing point of the solutions in which it is present.

Synonyms: monoethylene glycol, 1,2‑ethanediol, 1,2‑dioxetane.

Monoethylene glycol finds widespread use in various industries:

• The automotive industry. It is used as an antifreeze agent in vehicle cooling systems.
  
• Chemical industry. The main raw material for the production of polyester fibers, films, and plastics, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
  
• Heating and cooling systems. It is used as a coolant in industrial and household installations.
  
• Production of paint and varnish materials. It is used as a solvent and stabilizer.
  
• Cosmetics and household chemicals. It is included in moisturizing and cleansing products.
  

Storage conditions: Store in airtight containers made of aluminum, corrosion‑resistant, or aluminized steel. The product in barrels is stored in covered, unheated warehouse spaces. The barrels containing the product must be stored vertically. The height of the barrel stack must not exceed three tiers.

Safety requirements: Ethylene glycol is moderately toxic. If ingested, it can cause intoxication and damage to the liver and kidneys. The lethal dose for humans is approximately 100 ml. When working with the substance, precautions should be taken, and personal protective equipment should be used.

Packaging: Triethylene glycol is supplied in drums, IBC containers, and insulated tank containers.
