DIETHYLENE GLYCOL (DEG)

Diethylene glycol is a clear or slightly yellowish, odorless liquid. 

This organic compound belongs to the class of diatomic alcohols and has the formula C4H10O3. The liquid is viscous, hygroscopic, prone to auto-oxidation when exposed to air, and combustible.

Diglycol has lower volatility, higher boiling point, and crystallization temperature compared to ethylene glycol. It is highly soluble in water and various organic liquids over a wide temperature range. The substance does not interact with mineral or synthetic oils.

Diethylene glycol is in demand in various industries. It is used as a solvent, softener, and moisturizing agent. In particular, it is used for the following purposes:

  • production of cooling, braking, and hydraulic fluids, and heat transfer fluids (often in combination with ethylene glycol);
  • plasticization of adhesives, inks, and dyes;
  • production of polyurethane, acrylates, and esters;
  • extraction of aromatic substances;
  • gas drying;
  • plasticization of PVC and other popular polymers;
  • maintaining the necessary humidity of tobacco and cork raw materials.
